Instead of, “Why did you lie to me?” You
ask, “So, help me understand how that
fits with what you said last week.” This
bypasses their defense system. You’re
not accusing. You’re mapping. A narcissist
cannot maintain a false map for long.
Now, here’s the the real truth.
You are not meant to get a clean
confession. That is a fantasy that will
keep you stuck for years. The
truth comes out in fragments, in
contradictions, in moments where their
mask slips because no one is fighting
it. When you see enough fragments,
gaslighting stops working. Not because
they stop lying, but because you stop
needing them to confirm the reality.
And that’s the moment the power
truly shifts. Because the most dangerous
thing for a narcissist is not just about
being exposed. It’s about being
irrelevant to how you understand the
truth.

Another Tactic: Feed them something false.
“I quickly learned from others in town that [Trump] knew next to nothing about the casino industry, including the rules of the games”.
On this subject and others, Johnston played the trick of intentionally saying something false in order to get Trump to agree and betray his ignorance.
