Trump genuinely liking Mamdani actually does make his look more sympathetic and human. Almost makes you forget about the unbelievable corruption and open looting of the nation. Trump getting along with Mamdani is the only smart political move in a long while, its that old “political instinct” people talk about, stand beside the guy people actually like.

Trump loves to be in proximity to anything successful. We saw that with the World Cup. He didn’t care that Spain won as long as he was in the photo. Trump is aware Mamdani is loved by New Yorkers, that’s what he desires. In his core He’s just a bandwagon fan.

I think it might be a trait of narcissists because my dad is the same way - they have no strong conviction or ideology beyond being “the winner”. The kind of guy that voted for Obama 2x and then Trump 3x. And like Trump, he was super critical of Mamdani until he won and became super-popular. Things like ivy league, nobel prizes, wealth and prestigious political/business titles is what matters to these kind of people, not ideology.

When Mamdani visited the White House for the first time, what was his strategy to get Trump to like him?
